Chapter 181
Evelyn Carter's voice remained steady as she spoke. "If she truly desired this artwork, why did she withdraw from the bidding? She never intended to purchase it - this was merely a ploy to manipulate me!"
The crowd's expressions shifted with sudden understanding.
"Did Ms. Sterling deliberately scheme against Ms. Carter due to lingering feelings for Mr. Blackwood?"
"That seems unlikely. Their divorce is finalized. What purpose would such pettiness serve?"
"You underestimate Nathan Blackwood's appeal. A man of his caliber isn't easily forgotten."
"Such refined elegance masking such cunning tactics. Wasting intellect on romantic games - what a shame!"
The murmurs criticizing Evelyn brought visible satisfaction to Victoria Sterling's face.
"Ms. Carter, is this accusation accurate?" Leonard Blackwood's brow furrowed as he studied Evelyn intently.
Reginald Blackwood's gaze also settled on Evelyn, awaiting her response.
"Ms. Sterling, you've gravely misinterpreted my actions."
Evelyn stepped forward, her striking features now etched with wounded dignity. "I initiated the bidding for this painting. You were the one who followed my lead. My appreciation for this artwork and desire to support the charity motivated my participation from the outset. Both Mr. Blackwood and Mr. Montgomery can attest to this."
The audience's perception shifted visibly.
"You—!" Victoria's fury rendered her momentarily speechless.
"I can corroborate her account!"
Julian Montgomery rose promptly, eager to demonstrate loyalty to his admired Evelyn. "Ms. Carter placed the opening bid, with Ms. Sterling subsequently joining. By rights, this painting should belong to Ms. Carter."
Nathan Blackwood's piercing gaze chilled as it settled on Julian. This persistent nuisance needed removal.
"My initial intention was to acquire this piece for my personal collection," Evelyn continued, her voice softening. "The original hanging in Grandfather's study holds special meaning for me. Even as a reproduction, this painting evokes cherished memories of our time together."
Her lashes lowered delicately as she sighed. "When Ms. Sterling demonstrated such determined interest, I withdrew after several bidding rounds as proper etiquette dictates. I fail to comprehend how this constitutes wrongdoing. Your accusations wounded me deeply, Ms. Sterling. If you feel financially disadvantaged, I'm prepared to purchase the painting from you to rectify your loss."
The dramatic reversal stunned observers.
Evelyn's luminous eyes shimmered with convincing sincerity, her acting prowess making the performance utterly believable.
Nathan tilted his head slightly, exhaling through clenched teeth as his intense focus remained fixed on her.
He observed silently, allowing her theatrical display to continue.
"Preposterous!" Victoria's complexion flushed crimson with humiliation.
As she teetered on the brink of public outburst, Penelope Whitmore intervened swiftly with a discreet pinch. The sharp pain restored Victoria's composure, preventing an undignified scene.
"A simple misunderstanding!" Penelope interjected smoothly. "Father, Victoria rarely attends such events and often follows others' leads in purchases. What matters is her thoughtful intention to select your gift."
Her meaningful glance at Victoria carried unspoken instruction. "Your mother just called regarding an urgent matter at home. You should contact her immediately - don't keep her waiting. Go now."
Victoria retreated through clenched teeth, frustration evident in every stiff movement.
Reginald's brow creased momentarily before he grasped Evelyn's hand tenderly. "Evelyn, had you mentioned your admiration for that painting, I would have gifted it without hesitation. A Renaissance masterpiece means nothing compared to your happiness. Were it Michelangelo's David you desired, I would move heaven and earth to obtain it! My dear, you must know I deny you nothing."
"Your affection is treasure enough, Grandfather. I require nothing more." Evelyn squeezed Reginald's hand, her smile radiant.
The assembled guests reached unanimous understanding.
Though legally divorced from Evelyn, Nathan clearly maintained connections. Victoria Sterling's romantic aspirations appeared doomed.
