Chapter 211
Evelyn wished she could transform into Sophia's pet crocodile, Bruno, and bite off Nathan's arrogant head.
During their three-year marriage, Evelyn and Nathan had slept in separate bedrooms. He had never even brushed his fingers against hers. Now that they were divorced, Nathan kept grabbing her waist and invading her personal space. Evelyn thought Nathan was so disgusting that even Bruno would refuse to eat him.
Nathan's heart shattered when he saw the revulsion in Evelyn's eyes at his touch.
"Mr. Blackwood!"
A Porsche screeched to a halt nearby. Oliver rushed out, his face pale with worry.
"Mr. Blackwood, have you lost your mind?! After that horrific car crash, you should be in the hospital! Since when did you start gambling with your life?!"
"I'm not dead yet."
Nathan struggled to keep his heavy eyelids open, his vision still blurred. "And who are you to question my decisions?"
Evelyn froze in shock.
Now she understood why Nathan had been so disoriented this morning, why his hands had trembled too violently to hold a pen.
He'd been in a car accident.
"Nathan, you absolute idiot! You should be getting medical attention, not finalizing divorces! Do you think Death cares how handsome you are? Internal bleeding could paralyze you if untreated!" Evelyn's voice shook with unexpected concern.
Nathan's lips thinned. "Haven't you been waiting for this day? If I'd gone to the hospital instead of signing those papers, would that have made you happy?"
Evelyn blinked, then laughed coldly. "Of course not. So I should thank you for your dedication?"
"Evelyn!"
At the familiar voice, Evelyn whirled around.
Two sleek Bentleys had pulled up silently. Sebastian and Dominic stood by the cars, impeccably dressed. Her second brother held a bouquet of blood-red roses, his smile radiant.
"Seb! Dom!" Evelyn sprinted toward them, her entire face lighting up.
Nathan felt like his heart had been dipped in acid, the bitterness consuming him.
He remembered stupidly waiting outside the Kingsley mansion years ago, watching through the windows as the family laughed together while he stood freezing in the snow, only to be humiliated later.
He didn't know whether to hate himself for being blind to Evelyn's true identity or hate her for deceiving him so completely.
"What are you doing here?" Evelyn gently took Sebastian's bandaged hand. "Seb, you should be resting at home!"
"I'm not made of glass. I healed weeks ago." Sebastian wrapped an arm around his sister's waist. "Today matters to you, so it matters to us. We missed your wedding...but we wouldn't miss this."
"Seb..." Evelyn's nose stung with emotion.
"Congratulations, Evie!" Dominic thrust the roses forward. "Congratulations on ditching that bastard Nathan! Welcome back to royalty!"
"Thanks, Dom! Love you!" Evelyn buried her face in the fragrant blooms.
Dominic had deliberately said "that bastard Nathan" loudly enough for the entire block to hear.
The bastard in question looked ready to commit murder.
"Evelyn!"
From another luxury car emerged Lillian, Camille, and Sophia, surrounding Evelyn in a warm embrace.
"You all came?!" Evelyn's eyes welled up.
"Obviously!" Sophia crushed her in a hug.
Lillian explained gently, "Harrison wanted to come too, but we thought it might cause unnecessary attention..."
"I understand." Evelyn smiled through her tears.
Nathan watched his ex-wife enveloped in familial love and felt both tormented and curious.
For three years, he'd given Evelyn none of this affection. So why had she stayed? Why endure his cruelty?
The unanswered questions were driving him mad.
"Oh my God! It's Camille Kingsley! The legendary actress who retired at her peak!" Oliver gaped at the still-gorgeous movie star. "I need her autograph! My mom worships her!"
Nathan shot him a death glare. "We're leaving."
But the words barely left his mouth before darkness swallowed him whole.
