Chapter 39
Julian Montgomery clicked his tongue in disapproval and rushed after Evelyn. "Ms. Carter is right! It's completely inappropriate for you to touch her now that you're divorced. Ms. Carter, let me carry you instead!"
"Get lost!"
Nathan Blackwood and Evelyn snapped in unison. Nathan's eyes burned with intensity, while Evelyn's cheeks flushed pink.
Julian smirked to himself. Interesting. They still act like a married couple.
At Kingsley Medical Center, Evelyn was wheeled into the emergency room while Nathan and Julian waited in the sterile white corridor.
"Nathan, you're brutal. How could you yank her slender arm like that? Were you trying to dislocate it?" Julian shook his head, his expression full of reproach.
"How did you know she worked there?" Nathan's voice was icy, his piercing gaze sharp with suspicion.
"I stopped by for lunch and saw her doing manual labor near the service entrance. She was working so diligently—you'd never guess she used to be your wife." Julian's lips curved in admiration. "She's humble, resilient, and knows exactly when to stand her ground. Truly the most remarkable woman I've ever met."
Nathan's fists clenched, his knuckles turning white. "Then you clearly haven't met enough women."
"At least I can recognize a treasure when I see one, unlike some people." Julian scoffed, deliberately provoking him.
Nathan's chest tightened painfully.
"Honestly, I have a feeling you two will reconcile."
"Impossible." Nathan's voice was rough, strained.
"It's obvious you still care. Otherwise, why rush over the moment you heard? Look at you—dropping everything to see her, staring at her like she's the only person in the room. How can you deny it?"
Julian leaned against the wall, arms crossed, shaking his head in amusement. "You're unbelievable. You divorced her for your precious Victoria, yet you lose your mind seeing her with someone else. What's the plan? Collecting wives like Harrison Kingsley?"
"She promised Grandfather we wouldn't finalize the divorce until after his birthday. She needs to honor that."
"She only agreed to delay it out of respect for Reginald. Yet here you are, clinging to her like a lifeline. Pathetic."
"Stay out of it." Nathan's breathing grew uneven.
"I would, except I'm interested in Ms. Carter. So let's settle this now—stop interfering with my woman." Julian's tone was uncharacteristically serious.
"Give it up. You're not her type." Nathan's expression darkened.
"She won't know unless she tries."
"Nathan Blackwood!"
Julian ignored Nathan's thunderous glare, tilting his head with a defiant smirk. "But if you've changed your mind—if you want her back before marrying Victoria—I'll back off. You're my only real friend, after all. But if you go through with the wedding and still harass Evelyn? I won't stand by you. I'll help her fight you."
Nathan's lips pressed into a thin line, his jaw rigid.
"Julian Montgomery!"
A furious roar shattered the tense silence.
Nathan barely turned before a fist collided with his cheekbone.
