Chapter 216
"Evelyn, please stop complimenting me. My needlework can't hold a candle to Mother's." Arabella's cheeks flushed as she shyly bit her lip, revealing adorable dimples.
Being praised by Evelyn made Arabella's heart flutter.
But what truly set her pulse racing was when Nathan had admired her work too. The memory alone might keep her awake all night.
"You've inherited not just Camille's musical talents but her exquisite embroidery skills too," Evelyn remarked, eyes sparkling. "I could introduce you to Rosalind Walker herself. With your combined talents, you'd dominate the fashion world overnight! What do you say?"
"Thank you, Evelyn. But my heart belongs to acting." Arabella's voice softened with uncertainty. "After all, I'm studying at Crestview Arts Institute. I dream of becoming a renowned actress."
Her father Harrison had vehemently opposed this path, still haunted by how the industry had treated Camille years ago.
Arabella had secretly transferred from Valmont University to Crestview, studying drama for eight months before Harrison discovered the truth. His reluctant permission came with an ultimatum - complete her degree under his conditions or be disowned.
Determined to prove herself, Arabella vowed to succeed on her own merits. She wanted to change Harrison's perception of acting and earn his genuine respect.
"Magnificent! If that's your dream, you have my full support!" Evelyn embraced her, though concern shadowed her bright eyes. "But the entertainment industry is a viper's nest. Without connections or wealth, doors won't open easily. When you audition, simply write 'Harrison Kingsley is my father' on your resume. I guarantee you'll-"
"Evelyn! Father already despises my career choice. That would only make things worse!" Arabella laughed nervously. "Besides, success earned through privilege would feel hollow. I want to prove my worth through hard work alone."
"That Kingsley ambition shines through!" Evelyn sighed, pinching Arabella's cheek affectionately. "I just worry the industry might break your gentle spirit."
Like Camille, Arabella possessed remarkable talent but a tender heart. In that cutthroat world, she'd be vulnerable prey.
"Evelyn...may I ask you something?" Arabella hesitated before whispering, "About your...former marriage?"
"You want to know about Nathan?"
Arabella nodded eagerly. "Why did you divorce? Did he...hurt you?"
"No, we simply weren't compatible," Evelyn answered smoothly.
"But...as CEO of Blackwood Industries, he must have been terribly busy. Was that why-"
Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "Why not assume he was unfaithful?"
"Impossible!" Arabella waved dismissively. "With his fortune? He'd be terrified of dying before spending it all!"
Evelyn's laughter rang out - her fierce reputation within the family remained intact.
Just then, her phone vibrated.
Nathan's name flashed on the screen.
Her expression darkened. Not wanting to worry Arabella, Evelyn slipped into her velvet slippers and retreated to the parlor.
"Well?"
"You answered unusually fast." Nathan's baritone voice curled around her.
"Ha! Don't forget to rate this five-star customer service," she quipped sarcastically.
Nathan's jaw tightened audibly. "I'm being discharged tomorrow. Meet me at Cliffside Manor."
"Tomorrow? In such a hurry to meet your maker?" she scoffed.
"Just be there. I'll be waiting."
"Not happening." Her refusal was immediate. "I'm occupied, and that house holds nothing for me anymore. Don't contact me again. Goodbye."
"You left many belongings behind," he countered smoothly. "Don't you want them?"
