Chapter 255

Someone else had taken the place beside Evelyn.

Nathan Blackwood instinctively pressed a hand to his chest, feeling his heart tremble violently. It ached so deeply, as if it had been carved out entirely.

Only now did Nathan truly grasp the finality of their divorce.

In the underground parking lot, Theodore Winslow hurried toward Alexander Whitmore and Evelyn the moment he spotted them.

"Ms. Carter, how are your injuries?"

"Just a scratch. Where’s the attacker?" That was all Evelyn cared about right now.

"Don’t worry. I’ve already had him taken to the secure holding facility. He won’t escape." Theodore leaned in, his voice low.

"Good. Theo, we have a major operation coming up in the next few days." Evelyn’s almond-shaped eyes narrowed dangerously as she gave his shoulder a firm pat.

Theodore nodded solemnly. "I’m always ready for battle."

"Wait here. I need to say goodbye to him first."

With that, Evelyn turned and walked back toward Alexander.

At that moment, the man standing beside the Bentley with his hands clasped behind his back looked like a masterpiece carved from ice and elegance.

"As you saw tonight, Mr. Blackwood and I have… complicated history."

Evelyn lifted her gaze to meet Alexander’s faintly smiling face. Guilt laced her tone as she admitted, "I had no choice but to drag you into this mess. I shouldn’t have involved you. I’m sorry."

"No need to apologize. It’s an honor to be of use to you." Alexander’s voice was smooth, laced with an undercurrent of something deeper.

Evelyn pressed her lips together, the words only making her feel worse.

The man’s smile deepened. "If you find me useful, you’re welcome to use me again."

"Sir, you’re joking." Evelyn let out a bitter laugh. "I don’t want a repeat of tonight."

"Keep the wound dry for a week and watch for infection. It’s late—you should head home."

Though reluctance flickered in Alexander’s eyes, he knew when to step back. With a final glance, he turned to enter the car.

"Wait!" Evelyn knocked on the tinted window.

The glass slid down, revealing Alexander’s amused expression.

"You called me Ms. Carter in front of Nathan. How did you know who I was? You recognized me from the start, didn’t you?" Evelyn’s curiosity burned. If she didn’t get an answer, she wouldn’t sleep tonight.

"Yes." Alexander’s gaze locked onto hers, deep and unreadable.

"I never show my face publicly. Few people in Crestview know my real identity. How did you? Have we met before?" Her eyes sparkled with intensity.

Alexander’s lips curved slightly. "I’ll tell you… next time we meet."

His secretary and bodyguard entered the car, and the two luxury vehicles pulled away, leaving Evelyn standing there.

Suddenly, she smacked her forehead. "Damn it! I forgot to ask his name again!"

The Bentley glided through Crestview’s glittering nightscape.

Alexander stared out the window, but all he saw was Evelyn’s breathtaking face reflected in the neon lights.

He exhaled slowly, fingertips brushing the cold glass.

Evelyn… I never expected to find you like this.

"Mr. Whitmore, I did a quick check on Nathan Blackwood and Ms. Carter’s relationship. There’s no record of their marriage, but I discovered they finalized their divorce just this month."

The secretary scrolled through his tablet, then added cheerfully, "Ms. Carter is single now!"

"It doesn’t matter. She said I’m closer to her than Nathan ever was." The memory of those words sent a thrill through Alexander.

"Congratulations, Mr. Whitmore! You’ve already beaten Nathan Blackwood!" His secretary grinned.

Alexander’s expression darkened, his icy gaze softening only at the thought of Evelyn.

"This isn’t nearly enough."

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"What I want… is to be the only one in her heart."
