Chapter 269
Would ordinary people even stand a chance at love if someone like Evelyn struggled to find a partner?
"Nathan, I'm in the middle of a meeting. Save the trivial talk for later." Evelyn pinched the bridge of her nose, irritation lacing her voice.
"Trivial?" Nathan scoffed. "Choosing a life partner is trivial to you? Let me be blunt—do you think being CEO of Monarch Group is trivial?"
Evelyn clenched her jaw. That sly old fox. He was using his position to corner her. Did he learn these manipulative tactics from Harrison?
"Fine, I'll go. But not today—I have an important meeting." She seized the excuse, buying herself time.
"You can delay, but you can't avoid it forever."
The dismissal in his tone grated on her.
The meeting dragged on, tension thickening the air. Everyone tread carefully, wary of provoking Evelyn and facing her wrath.
Back in her office, she collapsed onto the sofa, exhaustion weighing her down like a lead blanket.
Theodore entered with a steaming cup of coffee, concern etching his features. "Ms. Carter, is the project giving you trouble?"
Evelyn groaned. "Harrison, that ruthless schemer!"
She kicked off her heels, tucking her feet beneath her. Theodore hesitated only a second before draping a cashmere throw over her legs. His hands moved with practiced ease as he massaged her calves.
Apart from his mother, he'd never cared for anyone so devotedly.
Eyes closed, Evelyn murmured, "I want to shoulder this responsibility—to free Sebastian completely. I am capable."
More than capable. Power and strategy thrilled her. Had it not been for her disastrous marriage, she would've claimed the CEO title long ago.
I'll make up for every second wasted on that worthless man.
Theodore's voice softened. "The blind date might not be terrible. Think of it as meeting a new friend. The Chairman isn't forcing marriage—he just worries for you."
Jealousy pricked him, though he buried it deep. He'd always known his place. How could someone like me ever deserve Evelyn Carter?
"You're right. It's just a date." A sly smile curled her lips as she wiggled her toes. "He has his games, but I have mine."
Theodore's chest warmed at her playful grin. "What scheme are you plotting now?"
Evelyn sprang up, padding barefoot toward her desk. Theodore snatched her heels, following. "At least wear these—you'll catch a chill."
She lifted a foot, letting him slide the shoe on. Grabbing a pen, she scribbled furiously before thrusting the list at him. "Have everything here by tonight."
Theodore scanned it and chuckled. "Ms. Carter, you're positively wicked."
