Chapter 487

Evelyn's piercing interrogation had torn away Lawrence's carefully constructed facade, exposing his ingratitude for all to see.

She smirked inwardly. Didn't you want to sever ties with the Kingsleys? Fine. I'll drag out every skeleton you tried to bury and parade your darkest thoughts before everyone!

Lawrence's lips formed a thin line. Though his mouth still curved in a practiced smile, his gaze toward Evelyn turned glacial.

This was the woman Theodore had been so infatuated with? A venomous, sharp-tongued vixen! If his brother had married such a troublesome creature, would their family ever know peace again?

The air grew thick with tension.

Leonard Blackwood decided Evelyn Kingsley was his personal nemesis. Every encounter with her inevitably led to disaster.

Lawrence's legal prowess was undeniable. Leonard had long wanted to recruit him, but this unexpected connection to the Kingsleys made his skin crawl.

"So Mr. Pembroke shares such... history with the Kingsleys," Nathan remarked, his penetrating stare never leaving Evelyn even as he addressed Lawrence. "And Ms. Kingsley happens to be your benefactor's daughter. Is this how you repay kindness - by constantly antagonizing her?"

Evelyn's brow furrowed at Nathan's words.

Was he... defending her? Taking her side against his own family? He'd never done that during their marriage. Was this some belated attempt at reconciliation?

Absolutely unnecessary! The man must have lost his mind!

Reginald's frown deepened at the exchange.

"Ha! So according to you, Ms. Kingsley, I shouldn't practice law simply because my family received yours' kindness?" Lawrence countered with saccharine sharpness. "I'm a professional. In my world, there are only clients and non-clients. Since Ms. Cassandra Blackwood is my client, naturally I'll give her my best."

He flashed a razor-thin smile. "There's no conflict here. Were you to hire me, Ms. Kingsley, I'd serve you with equal dedication. This has nothing to do with repaying debts, wouldn't you agree?"

Nathan's fist clenched at Lawrence's smug expression, his eyes darkening.

"Oh heavens! I wouldn't dare employ such an illustrious attorney as yourself!" Evelyn gasped dramatically, waving her hands in mock horror. "A double-edged sword like you - today fighting my case, tomorrow helping others sue me!"

She tilted her head, feigning innocence. "You show no regard for my family despite my father saving yours. What worth does a mere woman like me hold in your esteemed eyes? If someone paid you to destroy me, wouldn't you do so enthusiastically? I simply couldn't afford such... distinguished services!"

Even Evelyn cringed at her own theatrics.

Victoria Sterling herself would have applauded this performance.

Nathan's lips twitched despite himself at Evelyn's deceptively sweet venom.

Lawrence coughed, his chest burning with suppressed rage.

Cassandra had hoped to leverage home advantage and Lawrence's presence to humiliate Evelyn. Even a minor victory would have soothed her wounded pride.
