Chapter 427
For two days straight, Nolan left at dawn and returned late at night.
Eleanor hardly saw him, let alone spoke with him.
Every morning she would pause by the upstairs window, watching his tall figure leave the estate.
He looked heavier each day, burden pressing down on his shoulders.
More than once she wanted to call out, to ask, to show concern-but the words always died on her lips.
Too much stood between them now.
So she stayed quiet, turned away, and poured herself into Norwood's treatments instead.
That was when her phone buzzed with Besty's call.
"Eleanor, what's going on? You've been missing from the store for days," Besty said, her tone full of worry.
"I'm fine," Eleanor said simply as she packed up her needles. "Just handling some personal matters." Besty paused.
Personal matters?
She knew Eleanor. Anything that kept her away from the company had to be serious.
But since she didn't want to explain, Besty held her tongue.
Her tone lightened. "Don't worry. Focus on your matters. I'll manage things here."
"Okay," Eleanor answered softly.
After the call ended, Besty frowned in thought, then quickly dialed another number.
Ryland's eager voice came on almost instantly. "Besty, have you finally decided to be with me? That's great!I'll tell my mom to start preparing-"
Besty rolled her eyes, cutting him short. "Do you even know what my boss has been busy with lately?"
Ryland's excitement faltered at once.
Besty noticed his silence and pressed harder."Well? Are you going to tell me or not? If not, don't bother calling me again."
She knew exactly how to corner him. Sure enough, Ryland panicked and spilled everything."No, no,I'll tell you! Norwood was schemed against-he's in a coma. Your boss is trying to save him."
Besty shot to her feet, stunned.
Save him?
Since when did Eleanor know medicine?
As if sensing her shock, Ryland rushed to explain."Don't act so surprised. Didn't she graduate from medical school? It's normal she knows some medicine."
Besty slowly relaxed. "I see."
With that cleared, Ryland tried to circle back. "Besty, about last time, I was wrong. To make it up to you,l want to-"
But before he could finish, Besty hung up.
He was always chasing after romance, and she had no patience for it.
She set her phone down, ready to get back to work, when the glass door swung open.
Her expression instantly frosted over as she saw Jonny.
If there was one person she disliked more than Nolan,it was him-for the way he had truly hurt Eleanor. Jonny adjusted his suit collar, wearing that smug, self -important look as he strode forward. "I'm here to see Eleanor. Could you let her know?"
Besty met him with a mocking smile. "Sorry, she's not here."
Jonny's brows knit together.
He had dressed up, brought a carefully chosen gift.
How could she not be at the store?
Forcing down his irritation, he asked,"Where did she go?"
A sly glint flickered in Besty's eyes.
She let the silence stretch before answering lazily,"With Mr. Stewart, of course. Whether it's a date or his place, how would I know?"
Jonny's fists clenched hard at his sides.
Weren't they supposed to be broken up?
How could they be together again?
Of course, with Nolan's power, she would cling to him.
Though his anger boiled, he quickly shoved it aside.
After all, Vickie and Donald's wedding was already in motion.
Once Vickie married Donald, he would have his foothold in the Shaw family.
And then, with just one order, Enigma's flagship store in Vladena would be crushed-forcing Eleanor back to him.
So, for now, he could let her and Nolan enjoy their little moment.
With that thought, he scoffed and turned to leave.
Besty caught the determined gleam in his eyes and smirked coldly.
Where did Jonny get the delusion that he could win Eleanor back?
In her eyes, a man like him wasn't even fit to polish Eleanor's shoes.
