Chapter 27

Inside the Morrison family's residence.

"Care to tell me where you disappeared to last night?"

Jaxton walked through the front door, only to spot Laura waiting for him with crossed arms.

Unease began to creep in as memories from the previous night flickered through Jaxton's mind.

With the dust barely settling from the last scandal, Jaxton knew Laura would get angry if she discovered he had spent time with Layla last night.

Searching for the right excuse, Jaxton tried to compose himself. Before he could speak, Laura vented her frustration, saying, "I've warned you again and again to stay away from Dayna. Why is it so hard for you to listen? Are you waiting for Amelia to give up on you, or are you determined to push me past my breaking point?"

Realizing Laura had no idea about Layla, Jaxton felt a wave of relief wash over him.

However, as soon as Amelia's name left Laura's lips, his irritation boiled over. "You're the only one who still thinks Amelia is a good person. Did you know she's the reason Mr. Flynn and Dayna landed in the hospital?"

In all her interactions with Amelia, Laura had only seen the girl's good manners, so she could not accept what she was hearing. "Amelia would never do something like that!"

"Why not? Dayna and Mr. Flynn haven't left their hospital beds yet. That is proof," Jaxton said.

Laura noticed Jaxton wasn't backing down, and for a moment, uncertainty clouded her eyes.

Watching her face change, Jaxton continued, "Don't let Amelia fool you, Mom. I actually followed your advice and went to see her first thing today. You wouldn't believe what I discovered. She's been sending out resumes, trying to get a job in secret. Imagine what people will say if word gets out that my fiancée is looking for work. Our family will become a laughingstock." Jaxton thought Laura would be furious upon hearing this.

But she simply wore a look of mild annoyance. With his patience fraying, he said, "Mom, aren't you mad about this?"

She met his gaze with a cold stare. "Do you think I can't see through your little schemes?"

Jaxton had suffered a lot from Amelia recently, and with Laura around, he couldn't really do anything to Amelia. Secretly, he wished his mother would step in and put Amelia in her place:

Although Laura wasn't overtaken by anger, she was displeased with Amelia looking for a job. Amelia's actions indeed did not consider the Morrison family's reputation.

Laura caught the resentment flickering across Jaxton's face, and her voice turned cold. "I've told you before, when something happens, you need to think it through first before acting. You don't have to worry.Amelia won't be working."

At those words, Jaxton's whole face brightened. He fixed his gaze on her."Mom, as long as you stop her,Amelia definitely won't dare to object."

"Stopping her myself will only make Amelia resent me." Laura shook her head and let a mysterious smile slip across her lips. Pulling out her phone, she called her assistant.

Any company associated with the Morrison family or less powerful than them wouldn't dare hire Amelia because they didn't want to cross Laura.

As soon as she ended the call, Laura turned the moment into a lesson. "Remember what I said, Jaxton. No matter the situation, keep your head cool-"

"I need to go, Mom.I have things to do."

Laura's words made Jaxton impatient. He snatched up his coat and started for the door, only for her to halt him in his tracks.

Certain that another lecture was coming, Jaxton frowned. But then, Laura just held out an elegant envelope to him. "Mom, this is an invitation letter from Pearl Bay Auction House. How did you manage to get one?" he said.
