Chapter 31
When Dayna heard Jaxton's words, her face went slightly stiff. When he looked her way, though, she still managed a smile of gratitude. "Jaxton, you are always so good to me!'
Silence settled between Jaxton and Dayna for the rest of the auction, neither daring to bid.
During this time, Amelia spotted a pair of cufflinks that caught her eye and quickly placed a bid of one hundred thousand. With Davin's help with the bidding, no one else dared to place a bid, making Amelia very pleased.
As the auction drew to a close, Jaxton tried to slip away with Dayna, but security blocked their exit and ushered them into a lounge nearby.
Once inside, the auction house staff demanded immediate payment for the bracelet. Even after pooling their funds, Jaxton and Dayna could scrape together only ten million. They both knew the Stewart family held the reins at Pearl Bay and hurriedly explained that more time was needed to pay the rest.
The auction house manager didn't make things difficult for them, simply stating that if payment wasn't received within a week, they would personally visit them to collect it.
Once outside the lounge, Jaxton picked up his pace, desperate to leave. Dayna quickly caught hold of his hand, stopping him short.
"What are you doing?" The frustration Jaxton had tried to bury quickly resurfaced, his patience thinning.
Dayna didn't rush to explain herself. Instead, she fixed her eyes on the figure ahead of them.
Jaxton followed her line of sight and spotted Amelia.
Jaxton and Dayna subconsciously moved towards Amelia, only to be blocked by security. "That elevator is for VIP guests only. You can't go there!"
"VIP guests?" Jaxton repeated.
His and Dayna's astonishment was written all over their faces.
Since when did Amelia have that kind of status?
The idea seemed impossible.
As Amelia vanished around the corner, Dayna's fingers curled into fists in anger.
Feigning shock, she blurted out, "Did Amelia come here with that old man she is supposedly involved with?"
Suddenly, her voice sharpened with realization. "So that's it! The people on the second floor targeted us because of her. I can't believe Amelia set us up like this. She's always picking on me, but this time, she dragged you into the mess, too, Jaxton. She has never cared about your feelings..."
Dayna's eyes glittered with satisfaction when she saw Jaxton's face darken.
When Amelia exited through the private passage with Wyatt, she planned to drive herself home, but Wyatt stopped her.
"It's too late for you to drive on your own. Let me take you home. I'll send someone to take your car back," he said.
Even though the city still hummed with life and the clock had barely struck ten, Amelia accepted Wyatt's offer, handing her car keys to Wyatt's subordinate.
No sooner had Amelia settled into Wyatt's car than Davin handed her the cufflinks she had bid on earlier.
Amelia's brows shot up in surprise, and she said, "I thought I'd have to wait until tomorrow to get these."
With a quick look at Wyatt for approval, Davin said with a grin, "Pearl Bay Auction House falls under the Stewart Group's name." Everything clicked for Amelia at once.
Accepting the box containing the cufflinks from Davin, she turned and offered it to Wyatt, who blinked at her, clearly surprised.
Trying not to seem too forward, she explained,"You've done so much for me lately. I picked these cufflinks for you, thinking they suit you. I hope you like them."
With their platinum finish and understated silver-gray pattern, the cufflinks had reminded her of Wyatt's polished elegance when she saw them.
Still, Amelia worried that their simplicity might not match his wealth or taste.
Before she could get lost in her worries, Wyatt extended his hand.
With a gentle laugh, he locked eyes with her. "Would you mind putting them on for me, Miss Flynn?"
Relief washed over Amelia. Her fingers trembled slightly as she lifted the cufflinks, breath catching at their closeness.
She could even hear Wyatt's heartbeat.
The moment she secured the second cufflink, Amelia drew back, sitting up straight. Wyatt, though, didn't look away; he met her eyes and grinned. "How do they look on me?"
Against his black silk shirt, the silver-gray cufflinks shimmered coolly, adding an extra touch of refinement to'his look.
After a thoughtful pause, Amelia replied, "They look really good on you."
With that admission, she found herself unable to meet his gaze, as the weight of his attention made her cheeks burn.
Soon, the car slowed in front of her apartment building. Just as she reached for the car door handle,Wyatt's low voice stopped her. "Miss Flynn, are you free sometime soon?"
Confused, Amelia turned to look at Wyatt. Quick to answer, Wyatt said, "My mother would like to treat you to a meal."
The truth was, ever since meeting Amelia, Della had been hoping for a second meeting. Wyatt, however, had held his mother back, not wanting her to rush things. Della, respectful of his wishes and worried about frightening Amelia, refrained from pushing the matter.
Meanwhile, Davin could tell that it wasn't Della who wanted to see Amelia, but rather Wyatt who wanted to spend more time with her.
Amelia genuinely liked Della and agreed readily.
Her response brought a rare smile to Wyatt's lips. "I'll come and pick you up for the meal."
Before Amelia left, Wyatt thanked her for the cufflinks again.
Though she wondered if his compliment was just courtesy, his words still warmed her heart.
While Amelia was feeling happy, the Flynn family and the Morrison family were in chaos.
