Chapter 94
Wyatt stepped through the doorway, groceries in one hand and keys in the other, only for the entire scene before him to freeze him in his tracks.
When he spotted the fear twisting Amelia's face, the look he sent Jaxton was chilling enough to freeze the air. He didn't even bother glancing at the blood trickling from Jaxton's head and chest.
With Amelia pinned beneath him, Jaxton hardly had time to react before a hand clamped down on his collar. He was yanked away fast, and a blinding ache soon shot through his abdomen.
Jaxton's fractured ribs caught the brunt of Wyatt's savage kick, sending him reeling and sputtering blood across the floor.
Though Wyatt's features remained calm, the cold fury burning in his eyes was unmistakable. Hauling Jaxton upright by his shirt, he slammed his fist squarely into Jaxton's face.
Amelia snapped out of her daze when Jaxton's agonized howl echoed in the room. She scrambled upright, tugging her clothes into place as she staggered to Wyatt's side. Grabbing his sleeve, she said, "That's enough."
Afraid he might harm her in his rage, Wyatt halted instantly. He looked at her with something dark in his gaze. "You are still defending him?"
That accusation took her by surprise. Once his misunderstanding registered, she shook her head quickly. "I'm not defending him. I just don't want you to get yourself into trouble over him."
Wyatt's hard stare softened just a touch. Even then, his grip never loosened on Jaxton's shirt. "He laid a hand on you. He deserves every bit of this."
A shudder crept down his spine when he imagined what might have happened if he'd been a moment late. His glare at Jaxton grew even more lethal.
Amelia spotted that dangerous look and hurried to speak. "Don't do this. It'll only dirty your hands. He's not worth it."
By then, Jaxton was reduced to a trembling heap. When Wyatt finally released him,he crumpled to the floor like a broken doll.
"Get him out of here. Dump him back to the Morrison family." Wyatt's bodyguards had been listening from the hallway, but had they kept their distance since Jaxton posed no threat.
Once Wyatt issued his command, the two bodyguards moved without delay and hauled Jaxton away.
With Jaxton gone, Wyatt turned to Amelia, wanting to rush her to the hospital. She insisted, though, that a shower came first.
Haunted by what she had just endured, Amelia felt filthy all over. She even wanted to throw away the clothes she was wearing.
Wyatt stood sentry at the bathroom door after she went in. "I'm not going anywhere. Call out if you start feeling sick," he said.
Except for a mild dizziness, Amelia didn't notice any other discomfort. The shower passed without trouble.
When she emerged, her gaze landed on the mess of vegetables and fruit scattered near the entrance-a reminder of Wyatt's errand. She started to pick them up, only to have Wyatt intercept her hand."Leave it.Someone else will take care of it."
Once she settled into the passenger seat of Wyatt's car, he handed her some bread and a bottle of warm milk. Nothing about the food appealed to her,but Wyatt's worried glance tugged at her. Reluctantly, she accepted them.
Peeling back the wrapper of the bread, Amelia's mnind wandered. She remembered that Wyatt had skipped breakfast as well. Glancing at the bread, she turned to him with concern. "Do you want some, too?"
Wyatt gave a simple nod, and Amelia broke off a generous chunk, holding it out to him. Rather than take it, he just parted his lips, waiting expectantly.
Amelia's cheeks grew warm at his gesture.
"I can't juggle eating and driving at the same time.Would you feed me, Amelia?" His words left her uncertain for a moment, but she soon obliged, lifting the bread to his mouth.
The bread was sweet, and although Wyatt wasn't fond of such flavor, he surprisingly didn't mind this time.
Soon, the car rolled to a stop outside Kretol City Hospital.
Marc waited for them at the entrance, already tipped off by Wyatt's message. Watching Wyatt hop out, open the door for Amelia, and guide her gently, Marc raised his brows in disbelief. Was this really the same Wyatt he knew? Wyatt gave Marc a quick, annoyed look as he saw his teasing expression. "What are you waiting for? Get inside and do your job."
A single glance at Amelia told Marc that she wasn't badly hurt. Yet the sight of Wyatt's unease was enough to hurry him along as he led them through the doors.
Outside in the morning air, Amelia felt fine, but inside the elevator, dizziness hit her like a wave.
Wyatt, who watched her every move, wasted no time to act. As soon as she pressed her hand to her head, his arm circled her waist protectively, steadying her."Are you feeling all right?"
"Just a bit dizzy," she admitted softly.
Marc had meant to head to his office with them, but hearing that, he changed course and brought them straight to the neurology department.
Although a specialist was already inside,Marc joined the examination since he saw how worried Wyatt looked.
Wyatt paced outside, unable to peel his eyes away from the closed door. The instant it opened, he rushed forward.
"Is she okay?"
Though Wyatt was asking Marc the question, the doctor responded first, his tone reassuring,"No need to worry. She's only got a mild concussion. A little rest, and she'll be back to normal."
"Are you sure it's nothing serious? Is it normal to feel dizzy all the time with just a mild concussion?Did you check everything?" Wyatt said, still concerned.
