Chapter 92

Laura's words drew immediate attention, both Santos and Jaxton fixing their eyes on her.

She continued, "Sixty percent of the Flynn Group belongs to Amelia. If she decides to-"

"Have you completely lost your mind? Amelia broke things off with Jaxton. Why would she help the Morrison Group now? Those shares are part of Katrina's legacy. You have no right even suggesting that," Santos interjected before Laura could finish speaking.

Disapproval burned in his eyes, and Laura bristled at the challenge. "And just who do you think I'm doing this for? Not for myself, that's for sure. I'm trying to save the Morrison Group," she said.

"You can stop pretending this is all for the company. What you really want is to help Jaxton," said Santos, his stare ice-cold. "I don't want to hear another word about this. Bring it up again, and you will need to stay at home and won't have any say in company matters."

Those words struck Laura silent at first. Then, her voice rang out, bitter and raw. "How can you say that? My efforts built the Morrison Group into what it is now!You really expect me to sit at home, wasting my time doing nothing? Don't even think about it!"

"Weren't you the one who always insisted a lady should stay at home and not work? You told Amelia the same thing before she ended things with Jaxton.Funny how the rules only matter when they suit you."

"You..."

At a loss for words, Laura could only glare at Santos, her frustration evident.

The truth was, she wanted Amelia nowhere near the business world because she wanted Amelia to hand those sixty percent shares to Jaxton to manage.

But such motives could never be revealed.

While Laura and Santos were arguing,Jaxton remained silent. It was only after Santos left in a huff that Jaxton turned to Laura. "Mom, you really shouldn't always take this attitude with Dad. Didn't you always say that women should be gentle and considerate?You-"

"Enough!" Laura snapped. Arguing with her husband had set her off, but Jaxton's words seemed to hit her where it hurt the most.

Tears of frustration glistened in Laura's eyes, and Jaxton quickly stopped talking.

Memories of the shareholders' criticism fresh in his mind,he moved closer to her, gently taking her hand."I'm sorry, Mom. I shouldn't have said that. Please don't be upset."

Laura's first instinct was to push Jaxton aside, but she remembered his injured ribs and held back.

Jaxton was all she had left. Seeing how downcast he looked, she softened her tone. "Listen to me, Jaxton. You need to reconcile with Amelia. Only she has the power to save you now."

The mention of Amelia's name sent Jaxton's thoughts back to what he'd witnessed at the hospital.

He could not shake the bitterness he felt, knowing Amelia had managed to catch the attention of someone like Wyatt after she walked away from him.

Frustration toward both Amelia and Wyatt simmered.

Jaxton didn't love Amelia, but the sight of her with another man grated on him, as though an old possession he'd thrown away had suddenly become priceless in someone else's hands. The only solution was to reclaim that possession.

This idea took hold, and Jaxton said, "But Amelia already called off our engagement." "So what? You can get engaged to her again, or you can marry her straightaway. The original terms made it clear-once she's married, she's free to control those sixty percent of shares. Jaxton, I know Amelia was hurt by what you and Dayna did, but she used to love you so much. If you just put some effort into comforting her, she'll come back to you. I know she will."

Amelia's stomach rumbled when she woke up.Grogginess clung to her as she blinked. Thinking of something, she turned her gaze to the spot beside her.

It was empty.

Was last night just a dream?

While Amelia was doubting herself, a flash of white on the bedside table caught her eye.

Without hesitation, she shuffled closer and snatched up the piece of paper. Just one line greeted her."I went out to buy breakfast."

Amelia didn't need a second glance to recognize Wyatt's handwriting. It carried the same charm as he did.

After tidying up the bed, she went to the bathroom to freshen up. Cool water splashed across her cheeks as a faint noise from the front door echoed.

Her first thought was that Wyatt had returned with breakfast, so she didn't check immediately and only went to the living room after finishing up her morning skincare routine.

Instead of Wyatt, she found herself staring directly at Jaxton.

Disgust flashed in her eyes. "What are you doing here?"

After being persuaded by Laura, Jaxton had come to Amelia's apartment early in the morning. Concerned Amelia might not let him in, he had even gone to Dayna for a spare key to Amelia's apartment. 2

Seeing how distant Amelia was put Jaxton on edge.Still, he tried hard to keep his frustration in check and said, "I want to talk to you about something important."

Amelia would have preferred not to deal with Jaxton, but out of respect for Santos, she asked, "What is it?"

"Let's get married," Jaxton said.
