Chapter 99
When Conroy spoke, Amelia chose silence, keeping her face unreadable.
She had braced herself for this, so his sharp words failed to catch her off guard.
After all, every bit he said rang with truth. She was nowhere near Wyatt's league-her situation and background couldn't even begin to measure up.
Conroy studied her with a hint of curiosity. He did not expect to find such poise. For someone of her standing, she carried herself with unusual grace. If only she came from a better family, he might have thought her worthy of Wyatt.
"Go ahead and divorce Wyatt. The Stewart family will see to it that you receive five hundred million as compensation," he said.
At first, he had planned to offer a much smaller sum,but Amelia's composure swayed him.
The mention of divorce made Amelia frown. After a moment, she answered, "I'm sorry, but I can't agree to your terms." Her marriage to Wyatt rested on an agreement. If she proposed a divorce now, it would be betraying a promise. Wyatt had done too much for her. She couldn't do something like this.
Disappointment flickered in Conroy's face, replacing his earlier patience.
"I thought you had a decent character, but it seems l was wrong. Clearly, half a billion is nothing to you when you know the value of Wyatt's assets far exceeds it. Why don't you just say your price? Unless it's something outlandish, I'm willing to agree."
"It's not about money, Mr. Stewart," she said. Amelia wanted him to understand that her reasons for marrying Wyatt were never about wealth, but she could see doubt clouding his eyes.
Without waiting, he pressed on, his voice cold."From what I gather, your family business isn't faring well. Are you prepared to watch the Flynn Group collapse just to hold onto Wyatt?"
The moment he realized she would not be bought,Conroy changed tactics, wielding the threat of ruin like a weapon. He knew the Flynn Group would never survive his attack.
Amelia's eyes grew sharp at that."Wyatt won't allow you to do something like that." "Oh,so you want to use Wyatt to pressure me?" Every trace of warmth left Conroy's voice. For a moment,Amelia felt resigned.
She wished to avoid offending Conroy, yet she could not let the company her mother built fall apart.
While she struggled to find the right words to say,she heard footsteps rush toward the pavilion from outside.
When she glanced up, Wyatt appeared, his eyes as cold as winter, striding straight toward them.
Wyatt walked into the pavilion with every bit of his attention locked on her. Amelia's calm demeanor caught his eye and gradually softened the steel in his gaze. "Did anything happen to you?"
Relief washed over her as soon as he appeared. She was ready to tell him everything was fine, but before she could speak, Conroy's fury boiled over. "Wyatt! You abandoned your responsibilities at the Stewart Group for her? How could you do that?"
"If you hadn't forced her here behind my back, I wouldn't have had to leave the meeting at all," Wyatt said coldly
Conroy had arranged for Doug to bring Amelia over at this time, knowing Wyatt had an important meeting at work. Never had Conroy imagined Wyatt would walk away from his responsibilities just to save Amelia.
This fed the anger burning in Conroy's chest. He stared at Wyatt. "Since you're both here now-go and get a divorce!"
"That's never going to happen. I won't divorce her,"Wyatt said.
"Are you really defying me on purpose?"
Conroy snatched a cup from the table and hurled it toward Wyatt. Wyatt did not budge, but Amelia reacted on instinct and yanked him out of harm's way.Because of this, the cup crashed into Jaycob, who had just hurried over.
After spending time in the hospital, Jaycob had only come to watch the drama after he had heard that Amelia had been summoned here. The last thing he expected was to get struck before he even had a chance to see what was happening.
Without wasting a moment, Doug signaled a servant and asked her to fetch some ice.
Watching Jaycob wince, Amelia felt a sting of guilt;she had not meant for him to get caught in the crossfire. Aware he had shielded Wyatt by accident, Jaycob shot Wyatt a resentful look. "I'm not here to lecture you,but do you think you can bear the consequences if you keep provoking Grandpa? He is old, and his health is at stake!"
He wore an expression that made it clear he took some pleasure in Wyatt's trouble, while Wyatt regarded his chest with a detached look. "It seems like your injuries healed fast."
"You..."
Conroy took in the heated exchange, unable to support one side over the other since they were both his family. He stayed silent, watching their squabble play out.
Once his temper had cooled, Conroy's voice dropped to a softer note. "Wyatt, I don't want to be harsh. But Amelia's family isn't well-off, and she's not a match for you."
"Nobody else gets to decide if Amelia is right for mne.I know she's the one for me," Wyatt said firmly.
"How could you..."
Before Conroy could finish speaking, he coughed.Doug reached for Marc's prescribed medicine in a hurry. Seeing this, Amelia gently tugged Wyatt's sleeve. When his eyes met hers, she quietly shook her head.
If Conroy fell ill from anger now, both she and Wyatt would be on the receiving end of the Stewart family's outrage.
She could endure the consequences herself, but she would never let Wyatt take the fall with her.
