Chapter 87

Davin slammed his foot on the gas, racing through the city with purpose. Before the car fully rolled to a stop at Kretol City Hospital, Amelia had already thrown open the door, hurrying out with Wyatt right behind her.

They had just reached the surgery wing when the operating room doors swung open and Michelle was wheeled out.

Marc met them with steady eyes and reassuring words."Mrs. Davis is stable now."

Relief swept through Amelia, loosening the fear that had gripped her chest. She rushed to her grandmother's side, holding her hand with trembling fingers.

Back in the hospital room, Amelia felt her emotions had settled down.

Still, she couldn't leave her grandmother's side until she woke up, insisting Wyatt return home to rest. But he refused to leave.

He believed that after his marriage to Amelia, as her husband, he should stay with her through anything.

Two long hours crept by before Michelle's lashes fluttered and her eyes finally opened.

Amelia's hand never left her grandmother's, and the moment she felt movement, her face lit up. "Grandma, you're awake!"

Confusion flickered across Michelle's face at first, but her memory returned fast. As the news she'd seen came rushing back to her mind, anger flushed her cheeks. "So the Morrison family has broken off the engagement? Did Jaxton mistreat you? Tell me the truth."

Her words tumbled out, voice quivering with outrage.

Quickly, Amelia tried to calm her down. "Please,Grandma, don't get upset. Let me explain everything."

Only after repeated reassurance did Michelle's breathing slow. Amelia gently shared the full story behind the split.

"It was my decision, Grandma. I was the one who wanted to end things with Jaxton. I should have told you earlier, and I'm so sorry you had to hear it that way. I never meant for this to happen..."

Michelle barely absorbed Amelia's explanation, only catching the part that mattered most. "You mean to say it was your choice to end things?"

Amelia's small nod brought a flicker of complex emotions to Michelle's gaze.

Had the Morrison family wronged her granddaughter, she would have been ready to confront them. But if this was Amelia's decision, the situation demanded a different response.

Once her breathing settled, Michelle's attention drifted toward the sofa.

At first, she mistook the man sitting there for Monroe, but a closer look startled her. Seeing Wyatt's striking face, she was shocked."It's you?"

Wyatt offered a gentle greeting. "It's been a long time,Michelle."

Amelia was momentarily thrown by his words.

Amelia's mind raced to make sense of Wyatt's words.Had Wyatt and her grandmother met before?

Confusion clouded Amelia's eyes as she glanced from Wyatt to her grandmother.

Michelle asked Wyatt, "Why are you here?"

Wyatt spoke with quiet confidence. "Since Amelia and I are husband and wife now, it's only right I accompany her here."

For a second,Michelle lay in shock, speechless on her hospital bed. Worried the surprise might be too much,Amelia watched her anxiously, bracing for another fainting spell.

After a while, Michelle managed to find her voice. "Is it true? You actually married him, Amelia?"

With the truth out, Amelia knew there was no turning back. She met Michelle's eyes and told her everything.

Amelia finished her confession and waited, half-expecting Michelle to scold her, but not a single harsh word came.Instead,Michelle simply shifted in bed and said, "Amelia, I'm feeling a bit hungry. Would you mind getting me something to eat?"

The gentle request surprised Amelia, who almost protested, but Wyatt quietly said, "Go ahead. I'll stay with her here."

Uncertainty flickered in Amelia's eyes, but with both of them urging her, she stepped out into the hallway.

No sooner had Amelia left the room than Michelle's gaze fixed on Wyatt, her expression a storm of mixed emotions."I never thought, after everything, that Amelia would marry you in the end."

Wyatt met her look with a steady calm. "You remember-it was me who first asked to marry her.Jaxton was never the right man for her."

Michelle didn't let the topic slide. "And what about you? Are you sure you're the man for her?"

The question made Wyatt pause. For a moment, he considered it, lost in thought.

Eventually, he answered with quiet honesty, "The Stewarts are a complicated bunch, and I'm far from flawless. But I'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe."

That assurance seemed to ease Michelle's worries. She'd always admired Wyatt's character; she just didn't want Amelia swept up in the chaos of his world.

She opened her mouth to speak, but Wyatt continued before she could, "You might wonder if | married Amelia to settle the score for being rejected before."

Before she could answer, Wyatt smiled gently."That's not the case. If I didn't want this, no one could make it happen. The truth is, I married Amelia because I love her."

That final line drifted through the hallway just as Amelia reached the doorway, stopping her in her tracks.

Wyatt loved her? Amelia had believed he married her out of obligation -a debt from years past, an old promise hanging between them.

Now, it felt as if her heart had been struck by lightning

She slipped quietly back into the hospital room, both Michelle and Wyatt watching her with gentle expressions. She kept her eyes down, setting the food on the bedside table, not daring to meet Wyatt's gaze

To her surprise, Michelle said with a smile, "I think I am not hungry anymore."

Amelia wanted to urge her grandmother to eat, but Michelle simply squeezed her hand and said, "You made a wiser choice than your mother ever did. You're married now, so cherish the life you're building together."

The meaning behind those words left Amelia puzzled. When she finally stepped into the hallway with Wyatt, she couldn't help but ask him, "What did you say to my grandmother while I was out?"

Wyatt met her question with quiet deliberation, choosing each word with care. "There's something you should know, Amelia. Years ago,I actually went to your mother and asked her for your hand."
